Ingredients

  • 4 large onions thinly sliced
  • 4 cups beef broth
  • ½ cup dry white wine
  • 2 tablespoon butter
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • 4 slices French bread toasted
  • 1 cup grated Gruyère cheese

Instructions 

  1. 1. Melt butter in a large pot over medium heat. Add onions and cook until caramelized, about 25 minutes.
  2. 2. Stir in sugar and salt. Add beef broth and wine. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 30 minutes.
  3. 3. Preheat oven to broil. Ladle soup into oven-safe bowls. Place a slice of toasted bread on top of each bowl and sprinkle with Gruyère cheese.
  4. 4. Broil until cheese is melted and bubbly, about 3-5 minutes. Serve hot.
